In the Gospel parable for today's Mass, Jesus speaks about finding a buried treasure or a pearl of great price. The person who finds or discovers these treasures willingly sells all that he has to possess them. There is nothing half-hearted about the pursuit of that which has so great a value.
Jesus reveals that the pursuit of God's kingdom, the pursuit of God and the things of God, are those treasures for which believers ought wholeheartedly give their lives. That does not mean we have to sell all we have and enter a monastery, divesting ourselves of all things worldly and material, though some do choose that route in response to the Gospel call. It does mean, however, that God's will and God's way must permeate and guide every aspect of our life and give direction to the decisions we make and how we live our lives.
Would it be clear to those who know you that your life is, in fact, wholly focused on God and the things of God?
St. Augustine said: "Christ is not valued at all unless he is valued above all."
May your life and mine reflect the high value we place on Christ and his kingdom. In word and in deed may it be clear that Christ is our greatest treasure, our pearl of great price, the one for whom we willingly give our lives.
