On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (January 12, 2014), Matthew reports that a voice from heaven declared as Jesus was coming from the water, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” The Father’s love for his Son, Jesus, was real, deep and abiding. That love motivated and nourished Jesus as he undertook the mission the Father had sent him to accomplish.
In a real way, we are also, through baptism, God’s beloved sons and daughters. In Baptism we enter a covenant of love with our God that is forever. Though we can choose to turn our back on God, he will never turn away from us. Let us revel in the good news that we are the beloved of God. Though we hopefully share relationships of love with family members and friends, even the best of them cannot match the depth of love that is ours in the relationship we share with God.
May that deep and abiding love God has for us motivate and nourish us as we seek to embrace the mission of Christ as our own. In particular, let us in word and witness, help others to come to know the love of the God that is now and forever.
